TCA SEND Department

The Cheadle Academy is an inclusive and supportive mainstream secondary school catering for children from year 7 to year 11. We welcome children with and without special educational needs or disabilities (SEND). We support children with a wide range of special educational needs across the four broad areas of need: cognition and learning, physical and sensory, communication and interaction as well as social and emotional needs and mental health. Our setting offers a safe and fully equipped learning environment for students to access the secondary curriculum. Our school is predominantly on one level and we have a lift and pathways ensuring that all classrooms can be accessed by all students, especially those with reduced mobility or requiring the use of a wheelchair/powerchair.

All staff are committed to inclusion and teachers adapt their learning to meet the needs of individual students. Students with SEND receive a range of support such as the provision of additional resources, small group or one to one intervention and in class support from a teaching assistant. Our SEND team works closely with parents and external agencies including the Staffordshire Educational Psychology Service and North Staffordshire Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS).

Enrichment opportunities are provided across the curriculum and the SEND team work closely with subject departments [or faculties] to ensure that our students with SEND have equal opportunities to access all aspects of school life.

Mr C Hadley chadley@thecheadleacademy.co.uk	Assistant Principal Inclusion	I am delighted to introduce myself as the Assistant Principal for Inclusion at The Cheadle Academy. I am responsible for the strategic direction of SEND, looked after children and safeguarding. I have worked at The Cheadle Academy as both a member of support staff and then as a teacher for over 20 years. Within the SEND team I lead on the strategic development of the SEND policy and provision in order to ensure the achievement of all children with SEND. I am proud to be working with such a dedicated and pro-active team of professionals who are dedicated to SEND and always striving for the best outcomes of our students.
Mrs S Halden-Evans shalden-evans@thecheadleacademy.co.uk	SENCO	Hello! My name is Sara Halden-Evans and I am the SENCO at The Cheadle Academy. In my role, I am responsible for leading our very professional team of support staff including Teaching Assistants and Personal Welfare Support Assistants and ensuring that the classes, groups and individual students receive the help and support that they need to continue to make progress. Prior to this role I was a teacher for 10 years with a special interest in dyslexia, autism and all social communication difficulties and needs arising as a result of attachment and trauma. Day to day, I ensure that the operational requirements (from the SEND policy) are implemented in school, with a special focus on how we measure the impact of the support that the team provides. Every day is different, and very best of all I get to meet many students and their families, find out what support might help and bring these ideas to life. It’s wonderful to see a student finally able to do something that they they thought was not possible. You can find me in The Learning Centre
